Ways to Give

This is a guide to help you discover ways to provide support to the Legacy of Compassion Campaign. There are many possibilities and opportunities for creative gift planning that can help your philanthropic giving blend with your own financial needs and tax strategies.  We are pleased to answer any of your questions and assist you, or your financial advisor. Don’t hesitate to call us at 707-258-9084 ext 202 or email [email protected].

Cash

Gifts of cash (or check or credit card) are the most common form of contribution. They are fully tax deductible in the year the gift is made.

Stock Transfers

Gifts of appreciated stocks or bonds (either publicly traded or closely held) have the same positive benefit to the Legacy of Compassion Campaign as a gift of cash, however, a gift of securities is usually more beneficial to you. With a gift of marketable securities, which have been held longer than one year, you receive a charitable deduction of the full, fair-market value of the security. In addition, you avoid paying any capital gains taxes on the appreciation. This can be a major benefit to you if you have held securities over a number of years and if they have grown in value.  Please contact us for stock transfer instructions

Life Insurance Policies

This is an easy and sensible way to make a generous gift. Life insurance policies that may no longer be necessary to meet specific needs can be given to the Campaign. By naming Napa Valley Hospice & Adult Day Services as your beneficiary and donating the policy, you benefit by a reduction in estate taxes and receive a charitable deduction. Many people like a combination of a cash gift along with an insurance policy allowing them to make a larger size gift.

Real Estate

If you own a house, ranch, apartment building, commercial building, vacation home or land that is fully paid off and has appreciated in value, an outright gift may be an advantage to you. You can deduct the fair market value of your gift, avoid capital gains taxes and remove that asset from your taxable estate. You can transfer the deed and either take the deduction now or keep the right to use it for your lifetime and that of your spouse.  It can also be used to fund a charitable remainder trust or provide income to you or others.

Corporate Matching

You may work for a company that supports or matches your charitable giving. Information on gift matching is available through a company’s human resources department but would provide you with an opportunity to double your gift to the Legacy of Compassion Campaign.

Pledge

We are pleased to accept a 3-5 year pledge for your campaign gift. Please utilize our campaign pledge form so that all of the terms are clearly defined for both of us.

Deffered Gifts

This is a powerful philanthropic tool can help you increase your income, reduce your taxes and pass on more wealth to your loved ones and it can greatly benefit the Legacy of Compassion Campaign. Some of the most popular planned giving methods are listed below:

Bequests

One of the simplest ways to give and help us meet our $1.5M planned giving portion of our total $9.5M Legacy of Compassion campaign goal is through naming Napa Valley Hospice & Adult Day Services in your will or trust.  A bequest allows you to leave your own legacy by making a gift in this important way. Some of the largest gifts ever made to Napa Valley Hospice & Adult Day Services have been made in the form of a donor’s will. If you already have a current will or trust and would like to include a gift to the Campaign without rewriting it, your attorney can add an amendment to your living trust or a codicil to your will.
To make your intentions known so that we can credit you as part of our Legacy of Compassion Campaign and you can enjoy the campaign acknowledgement and celebration in your lifetime, all you need to do is provide us with a copy of the appropriate language in your will or trust document.

Retirement Plans

Standard IRAs, Roth IRAs and potentially other qualified retirement plans can be an ideal gift source. Usually, retirement plans are subject to both income and estate taxes at your death which can result in nearly half of those assets being eaten away by tax. If you arrange to make a gift to Napa Valley Hospice & Adult Day Services from your retirement plan assets the result may be significant tax savings to your estate heirs.  Please check with your tax advisor.
You will need to fill out a form provided by the administrator of your retirement account.  The following information is typically required:

Beneficiary Name:  Napa Valley Hospice & Adult Day Services

Address:  414 So. Jefferson Street, Napa, CA 94559

Tax ID Number:  68-0393144

Relationship:  Charitable Organization, Tax-exempt 501 (c) (3)

Charitable Remainder Trust (CRT)

A Charitable Remainder Trust provides for the greatest flexibility among all of the life-income gifts.  A donor may transfer cash, securities, real estate or other property to a charitable remainder trust and select either a fixed (annuity trust) or variable (unitrust) payout rate for a life term or a term of years (not to exceed 20 years.)  At the end of the term, the assets remaining in the trust are used to support Napa Valley Hospice & Adult Day Services.  The minimum amount for establishing a Charitable Remainder Trust is typically $100,000.

You benefit by receiving a significant income tax deduction in the year the trust is funded, you create an income stream from non-income producing assets, you can diversify your investments, you avoid capital gains on the transfer of appreciated property and you may reduce or eliminate estate taxes.

To make your intentions known so that we can credit you as part of our Legacy of Compassion Campaign and you can enjoy the campaign acknowledgement and celebration in your lifetime.  All you need to do is provide us with a copy of the appropriate language indicating that your CRT benefits Napa Valley Hospice & Adult Day Services.
